What we would tell you in the studio

  • High mock collar. The neck rises in a close half-high collar that holds its line without folding over. It sits flat against the base of the neck to keep drafts off the collarbone.
  • Wide straight leg. The trousers drop straight from a drawcord waistband down to a wide hem. Deep side pockets sit flat against the hip seam so they do not interrupt the line of the knit.
  • Striped rust yarn. Horizontal bands in warm rust red run across both pieces. Knitting the top and bottoms in the same dye run ensures the stripe spacing and colour saturation align from shoulder to hem.
  • Wash and dry. Machine wash on a cold cycle using a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit face from snagging. Tumble dry on low heat or spread both pieces flat across a rack to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
