What we would tell you in the studio

  • Half-high mock collar. The collar stands close around the base of the throat without folding over. It holds its upright shape through the knit tension, keeping out drafts while resting softly against the neck.
  • Drawcord waist and pockets. The trousers stay in place with an adjustable matching drawcord embedded in the waistband. Inset pockets sit flat along the side seams so small items do not pull the knit out of line.
  • Straight wide-leg cut. We shaped the trousers with a generous, straight fall from the hip down to the shoe. The fabric hangs under its own weight without clinging to the legs as you walk.
  • Washing and yarn care. Machine wash both pieces together on cold inside a mesh laundry bag to protect the knit surface. Tumble dry on a low heat setting, or lay the set flat on a drying rack.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
