What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neck and sleeve lines. The mock neck stands upright without squeezing the throat, finished with clean edges that hold their shape. Long sleeves run straight down the arm to meet simple self-start cuffs.
  • Trousers and pockets. The trousers fall straight through the leg from a gathered drawcord waistband. Side pockets sit flat into the knit seams so they do not push outward when empty.
  • Yarn hand and drape. The knit is smooth against bare skin with enough weight to fall straight rather than cling. A touch of elastane keeps the knees and elbows from bagging out during long wear.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash cold inside a mesh laundry bag on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting or lay flat across a rack to preserve the length of the legs.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
