What we would tell you in the studio
- Neck and collar. The mock neck is ribbed to hold its upright shape around the throat. It sits close enough to block cold drafts without the bulk of a turned collar.
- Body and side splits. A straight cut lets the knit hang away from the torso. We added open side splits at the bottom edge so the long hem moves freely as you walk.
- Sleeve and cuff gauge. Long sleeves extend past the wrist with deep ribbed cuffs. The ribbing grips gently to keep the sleeves in place when pushed up the forearm.
- Washing and flat drying. Hand wash in cool water with a mild knit soap to keep the yarn soft. Press water out with a towel and dry flat on a rack to protect the length.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
