What we would tell you in the studio
- Roomy long cut. The knit hangs straight down without tapering inward, dropping below the knee. It provides heavy fabric weight that falls cleanly away from the body, making room for base layers underneath.
- Ribbed crew neck. A close rib bands the round collar so it keeps its shape through pulling on and off. The neckline rests flat against the collarbone without rolling or sagging across the collar.
- Sleeve and cuff. The sleeves run long, finishing in ribbed bands that hold position at the wrist. That cuff keeps the excess fabric of the sleeve gathered neatly instead of dropping over the hands.
- Washing and softening. Hand wash in cold water or run a gentle cold machine cycle. Lay it flat across a towel to dry so the heavy wet yarn does not stretch out. A first wash relaxes the fuzzy surface.

Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
