We knit this sweater with a wide, open neckline that can rest across both shoulders or pull down to one side. The cut is loose through the body, dropping into deep batwing sleeves that gather back in along the forearm. It falls past the waist toward the hip.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Wide convertible neckline. The wide neck opening stretches across the collarbone. You can wear it straight across both shoulders or pull it down to rest off one side, with a folded edge that sits flat against the skin.
  • Batwing sleeve construction. Deep underarm seams create a full batwing shape through the upper arm. The knit narrows down toward the wrist so the sleeve stays in place when pushed up.
  • Roomy body cut. We shaped this piece with an oversized drape that hangs straight and away from the torso. The lower hem settles near the hip, pairing easily with trousers, denim, or knit skirts.
  • Washing and flat drying. Wash this black knit by hand or in a cold, gentle machine cycle using a protective mesh bag. Reshape the sweater while damp and dry it flat on a rack to keep the shoulders from stretching out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
