Off The Shoulder Sweater Oversized Fall Going Out Tops
We knit this sweater with a wide, foldover neckline that rests across the shoulders or pulls down to one side. The body is cut loose to hang straight down toward the lower hip, giving the soft yarn plenty of room to drape. Ribbed cuffs gather the long batwing sleeves at the wrists.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Wide foldover neck. The open neckline is knit with a broad band that folds over flat against the collarbone. You can wear it straight across both shoulders or ease it down over one side.
- Batwing sleeve cut. The sleeves drop from a low, relaxed armhole into a roomy upper arm. Tapered ribbing at the wrist anchors the cuff and keeps the extra volume in place along your forearm.
- Loose body drape. We gave the torso an open, boxy shape that sits clear of the waist and falls around the hip. The weight of the knit pulls the fabric downward into soft, straight folds.
- Yarn and care. The caramel yarn has a smooth, medium-weight hand with enough stretch to keep the neckline band in place. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, then lay the sweater flat to dry.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
