We knit this sleeveless vest with an open-stitch crochet pattern that lets air pass right through. The front closes with slim ties, letting you adjust how open the neckline sits over a bralette or swimwear. It hangs straight and loose through the body, landing right at the hip.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Open crochet knit. The open-work stitches give the yarn a light hand and plenty of natural give. Air moves freely through the gaps, keeping the layer light even in warm weather.
- Adjustable tie front. A deep V-neck runs into a row of self-yarn ties at the center front. You can knot them securely or leave them loose depending on what sits underneath.
- Sleeveless straight cut. We dropped the armholes clean and kept the sides straight so the vest hangs away from the waist. The hem finishes with a plain edge right at hip level.
- Washing and care. Wash by hand in cool water with mild soap to protect the open-stitch loops from snagging. Press out water with a clean towel and dry flat on a rack.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
