What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neckline and placket. A clean round crew collar frames the neck and runs straight down into a flat double placket. It sits flush over plain tees, buttoned shirts, or thin knit tops without bunching up at the throat.
  • Long line drape. The body is cut wide and hangs straight, landing below the knee to give light coverage without adding bulk. Side pockets give hands a place to rest without pulling the front hem out of line.
  • Smooth lightweight yarn. We used a fine, soft knit that slides easily over other fabrics. It has enough give to stretch as you move, while keeping a clean vertical drop through the body and along the full-length sleeves.
  • Washing and care. Machine wash on a cold, gentle cycle with mild detergent. Skip the bleach. Lay the knit flat on a towel to air dry, and use a low iron if you need to clear packing creases.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
