What we would tell you in the studio
- Crew neck construction. A simple round neck sits flat against the collarbone, framed by a smooth knit placket. It closes neatly over collared shirts or lies flat against plain tees and camisoles without bunching up.
- Long hem and drape. The lower edge falls well below the knee, giving the piece a long, fluid line as you walk. Because the body is knit loose and roomy, the fabric drops straight down without pulling across the back.
- Fine lightweight yarn. We used a fine-gauge knit blend that has a smooth, soft hand against the skin and a slight mechanical give. It adds light coverage on cooler mornings without the heavy bulk of a winter coat.
- Washing and flat drying. Wash on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Skip the bleach. To protect the length and keep the shoulder seams from stretching under water weight, lay the cardigan flat to dry.

- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
