Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this layer with an open front and a generous cut that hangs clear of the waist. The dropped shoulders feed into wide sleeves, while deep patch pockets give your hands a place to rest. It works over tees, collared shirts, or lighter base knits without bunching.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy open cut. The unstructured body hangs straight down from dropped shoulder seams. Because the cut stays wide through the waist, it settles easily over thick jerseys or button-down shirts.
  • Pockets and ribbing. We finished the open front and cuffs with wide ribbed bands that keep their shape across daily wear. Two deep patch pockets sit at the front for small carry items.
  • Army green yarn. The midweight knit yarn feels soft against bare skin and holds enough weight to drape rather than cling. This army green shade is dyed evenly across the main body and trims.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cool water or dry clean to protect the stitch definition. Lay the piece flat on a towel to dry so the heavy knit retains its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
