Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this cardigan with a wide, boxy body that sits loose and drops straight from the shoulder line. The dusty blue yarn has a soft, substantial feel that holds the shape of the deep patch pockets. Wide ribbing finishes the cuffs and base band.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy open cut. The loose body hangs clear of base layers without pulling tight across the back. Dropped shoulders create plenty of room through the upper arm, leaving space for long sleeve tees and collared shirts underneath.
  • Patch pocket placement. We set two deep knit pockets low on the front panels. The knit is firm enough that the pockets keep their shape when holding a phone or a key set, without sagging past the ribbed hem.
  • Ribbed trim finish. Wide ribbing lines the cuffs, the open placket, and the lower hem. This denser knit structure keeps the edges flat and stops the open front panels from curling during daily wear.
  • Washing and shape care. Hand wash this cardigan in cool water or use a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Press out excess water between clean towels and lay the knit flat to dry so the heavy ribs do not stretch out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
