Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this cardigan with a wide, unstructured body that falls away from the torso. Dropped shoulders lead into loose sleeves that gather into ribbed cuffs, balanced by deep patch pockets at the front. The pale baby pink yarn gives the stitch work a clean, visible texture.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy open front. The body is cut wide and hangs straight down without buttons or clasps. It layers easily over tees, tanks, and collared shirts without pulling tight across the back.
  • Dropped shoulder sleeves. We dropped the shoulder seam low on the arm to give the sleeve extra volume. A deep ribbed cuff pulls the fabric back in at the wrist so the sleeve stays put.
  • Front patch pockets. Two deep patch pockets sit at the front panels, knitted flat against the main body. They hold daily essentials without dragging the front hem down unevenly.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cool water or dry clean to protect the stitch tension. Squeeze out excess water gently in a towel and dry flat on a rack instead of hanging.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
