Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this layer in a dark grey yarn with a soft, medium-weight hand that hangs straight and loose away from the torso. Dropped shoulders feed into wide sleeves, while deep front patch pockets sit low on the body. Wide ribbing finishes the cuffs and hem so the edges keep their shape over repeated wear.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Cut and drape. The body is cut wide and loose, falling straight down without tapering at the waist. Dropped shoulders lower the armholes so the cardigan sits easily over tees, collared shirts, and lightweight pullovers without binding.
  • Ribbed trim and pockets. We finish the cuffs and lower hem with wide ribbed bands that give the edges substance and structure. Two deep patch pockets are knitted flat onto the front panels, placed low for easy access.
  • Dark grey yarn. The dark grey shade is knitted from solid dyed yarn with a smooth, soft surface that feels comfortable over bare skin. The knit carries enough weight to drape cleanly without feeling bulky.
  • Wash and care. Hand wash in cold water with mild detergent or use dry cleaning to protect the knit structure. Squeeze out excess moisture without twisting the fabric, then dry the piece flat on a clean towel.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
