Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this piece in a roomy, open-front cut that sits well away from the body. Deep patch pockets sit at the front, framed by ribbed edges that keep the hem flat. It drops over basic tees or lighter knit tops without pulling at the underarms.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Open crew line. A simple round crew line sits flat at the neck, opening straight down into an unstructured front. The band holds its shape without curling, leaving space for collared shirts or base layers underneath.
  • Patch pockets and hem. Deep square patch pockets sit low on the body for small items. Along the bottom edge, wide ribbing finishes the hem so the short cut hangs straight instead of rolling upward with movement.
  • Ruby red yarn. This ruby red shade is dyed before knitting to keep the colour uniform across the front panels, back, and trims. The yarn has a soft, substantial hand that offers weight without feeling stiff.
  • Care for open knits. Hand wash in cold water or use a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Press out excess water between clean towels, then lay the knit flat to dry so the open front panels keep their true shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
