Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this cardigan in a bright yellow yarn with an open front and a loose, boxy drape. The dropped armholes leave plenty of room through the chest, while deep patch pockets sit flat at the sides. Wide ribbing frames the cuffs and hem to anchor the shape over tees and light slips.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy dropped cut. The body hangs wide and loose away from the torso, avoiding any cling across the back. Dropped shoulders lower the sleeve seam for an easy drape over long sleeve base layers.
  • Cuffs and hem ribbing. We finished the open edges, wrists, and bottom hem with a deep ribbed border. This structure keeps the sleeves pushable on the forearm and maintains the line of the open front.
  • Deep front pockets. Two knitted patch pockets are set low on the front panels. They lie flat against the knit when empty and are deep enough to hold a phone without pulling the cardigan forward.
  • Care and shape retention. Hand wash this knit in cool water with mild soap, or dry clean it. Press out excess moisture with a clean towel and lay it flat to dry so the heavy ribbing does not stretch out.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
