Oversized Cardigan Sweaters for Women

We knit this open-front cardigan with a generous, loose body and dropped shoulders that give the sleeves extra room. The pale lavender yarn has a soft, plush hand that provides light warmth without heavy bulk. Deep patch pockets sit at the front, framed by a broad ribbed hem.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Open front and crew neck. The round neckline transitions into a clean open placket with no buttons to fuss with. It hangs straight down the torso, leaving plenty of room to show whatever layer you wear underneath.
  • Roomy sleeves and cuffs. We dropped the shoulder line to create a wide upper sleeve that will not bind over shirts or knits. Wide ribbing gathers the wrist so the cuff stays put when pushed up.
  • Deep side pockets. Two square patch pockets are knitted right onto the lower front panels. They sit flat against the body when empty and are deep enough to hold a phone or cold hands.
  • Washing and yarn care. Hand wash this cardigan in cold water or use a gentle cycle inside a mesh laundry bag. Press the excess water out with a towel and dry it flat so the open knit retains its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
