What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neck and raglan sleeve. The pullover has a round crew neckline and dropped raglan sleeves that give the shoulders plenty of room. Button detailing down the top adds texture without adding weight to the drape.
  • Wide leg knit trousers. The trousers pull straight on with a high elastic waistband. We knit the legs wide from hip to hem, letting the fabric hang clear of the legs as you walk.
  • Side slit top hem. Side slits at the lower edge of the sweater let the hem settle cleanly over the trouser waist. The knit hangs loose around the hip rather than pulling in at the base.
  • Washing and flat drying. Hand wash in cold water or use a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent. Lay both pieces flat on a dry towel to dry so the knit retains its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
