What we would tell you in the studio

  • Striped lightweight gauge. The yarn is spun thin and knitted into broad blocks of blue and brown. It produces a soft, light fabric that drops cleanly without heavy bulk, keeping the profile relaxed.
  • Crewneck and chest pocket. A bound round neckline sits flat against the collarbone without pulling. We placed a small square patch pocket over the left chest, knitting it in matching stripe alignment.
  • Straight roomier cut. The body is cut wide from the underarms down to the hem, which clears the hips. It layers easily over collared shirts or fine base layers without bunching up.
  • Care and wash routine. Hand wash in cool water or dry clean to protect the yarn hand and keep the stripe lines crisp. Press out excess moisture with a towel and lay the sweater flat to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
