We knit this pullover in a smooth, light gauge with alternating horizontal blocks of brown and pink. The body hangs wide and straight off the shoulders, falling easily over denim or slip skirts without heavy bulk. A knit chest pocket breaks up the stripes across the front.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and chest pocket. A bound round neck sits flat against the collarbone without pulling tight. On the left side of the chest, we set a small square pocket knit in matching yarn to catch the horizontal stripe pattern.
  • Dropped shoulder and long sleeve. The shoulder line drops past the natural shoulder to widen the body. Full-length sleeves narrow gently down toward the wrists, finished with clean self-yarn edges that push up the forearm easily.
  • Roomy straight hem. The cut stays wide from the underarm straight down to the lower hem, landing around the hips. Because the knit is light, the extra fabric drapes loosely instead of standing out stiffly at the sides.
  • Wash and dry flat. Submerge the sweater in cold water with mild liquid soap and press the moisture out in a folded towel. Lay it flat on a mesh rack to dry so the stripes stay straight and the shoulder seams hold their shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
