What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and pocket. A simple rib bands the round collar so it lies flat against the collarbone. We added a single open patch pocket on the chest, knitting it in the same horizontal stripe sequence.
  • The relaxed gauge. We knit this from cotton yarns in a lightweight tension that moves freely. The body drops straight from the shoulders, giving you room through the torso without heavy bulk under a jacket.
  • Sleeve and hem rib. Long sleeves finish in neat cuffs that keep their grip on the arm. At the bottom, the rib hem rests around the hip line, letting the fabric fall straight rather than pulling in tight.
  • Laundering the knit. Wash this piece by hand in cold water or send it out for dry cleaning to protect the cherry dye. Squeeze the rinse water out in a towel and dry it flat on a rack.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
