We knit this lightweight pullover with horizontal stripes set against a soft mauve ground. The cut hangs straight and loose through the body, dropping down toward the hip. Long sleeves finish in plain cuffs, while a simple crew neckline keeps the collar flat under outer jackets. A small chest pocket breaks up the front stripe.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Roomy striped body. The body is knitted with extra ease so the fabric falls straight down rather than clinging. Wide horizontal bands of colour run across the torso and line up through the chest pocket.
  • Crewneck and cuffs. A close round neck sits flat against the collarbone without pulling tight. Ribbed trim finishes the neck opening, the wrists, and the lower hem to keep the edges from rolling.
  • Light gauge yarn. We chose a lighter cotton yarn for this pullover so it layers easily under coats. The fabric feels soft against bare skin and holds enough drape to move naturally as you walk.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash this knit in cold water or dry clean it to protect the shape of the stripes. Squeeze out excess water without twisting, then dry it flat on a clean towel.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
