We knit this striped pullover with a plain round neckline and long sleeves that gather slightly above the wrist. The body is cut wide and loose, dropping straight toward the lower body. Green and black bands alternate across the torso and arms, broken only by a small patch pocket at the chest.

What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and collar. The plain round neck is finished with a low-profile rib that stays flat against the collarbone. It pulls on easily over a collared shirt or sits directly over an undershirt without gaping.
  • Roomy straight cut. We shaped the body with extra width through the sides, letting the fabric hang clear of the waist. The hem falls low toward the hip line, giving you space to move without the fabric clinging.
  • Chest pocket detail. A small knit pocket sits on the left side of the chest, matching the horizontal stripe pattern. It breaks up the dark green and black bands across the front of the sweater.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or send to a dry cleaner to keep the dark dyes from running. Lay it flat across a towel to dry so the weight of wet yarn does not pull the shoulders down.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
