What we would tell you in the studio

  • High folded collar. The neck stands upright and folds over itself once, sitting softly against the throat. We knitted it with enough width that it rests in place without clinging or needing constant adjustment throughout the day.
  • Roomy straight cut. Dropped shoulders give way to long sleeves that finish in simple cuffs. The body drops straight down, leaving ample room for an undershirt or light tee, and the longline hem lands past the hips toward the leg.
  • Vented lower hem. Side slits break up the lower edge so the longer length does not pull tight across your legs as you walk or sit. The hem hangs flat rather than gathering in, keeping the lines loose and uncluttered.
  • Washing and shape. Hand wash in cold water or run a gentle machine cycle with mild soap. Lay the sweater flat on a clean towel to dry rather than hanging it, which keeps the heavy longline knit from stretching out over time.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
