What we would tell you in the studio

  • High roll collar. The collar folds over once or stands loose as a soft funnel. We used a fine rib along the neck so it keeps its shape after a full day of wear.
  • Stepped vented hem. The back hem drops lower than the front to add weight to the lower edge. Deep side vents let the knit split naturally over trousers or heavy skirts.
  • Roomy dropped sleeve. We set the armholes low on the body for a generous batwing shape. Long sleeves taper down to ribbed cuffs that stay put when pushed up.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or run on a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent. Lay the sweater flat on a towel to dry so the heavy knit does not stretch.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
