What we would tell you in the studio

  • High roll collar. The collar stands up around the neck with enough give to fold over or scrunch down. It keeps its shape without pinching or pressing tight.
  • Dropped shoulder seam. We set the armholes low on the body to give the long sleeves a loose drape. The knit relaxes across the shoulders and tapers down toward the ribbed cuffs.
  • Split lower hem. The back hem dips lower than the front, broken by deep slits at each side seam. This opening allows the long body to fall cleanly without catching when you sit.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or run a gentle machine cycle with mild soap. Press out excess water with a towel and lay the sweater flat to dry so the yarn holds its shape.

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
