What we would tell you in the studio

  • High roll collar. The neck stands upright to keep out drafts, or rolls over twice if you prefer a thicker band at the throat. It holds its shape without pinching.
  • Side split hem. We cut the hem long with open side vents. The back panel dips slightly lower than the front, so the knit clears your legs as you walk.
  • Smooth yarn hand. The blend knits up into a medium-weight fabric with gentle give. It feels soft directly against bare arms and stays smooth over a base layer.
  • Wash and flat dry. Hand wash or use a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag. Reshape the body while damp and lay it flat to dry so the heavy hem does not stretch.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
