What we would tell you in the studio

  • Double layer neck. The roll neck is knitted with enough height to stand on its own or fold over once. It sits close without pinching the throat, holding its shape through repeated wear.
  • Stepped hem with vents. The hem lands long with a slight step between the front and back panels. Open side slits keep the extra length from catching or bunching over trousers and skirts.
  • Dropped sleeve construction. The low armhole gives the chest and upper back plenty of room. Narrower ribbing along the lower sleeve gathers the fabric toward the wrist so the cuffs stay put.
  • Washing and shape care. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle or by hand with mild soap. Press the excess water out flat in a towel and dry on a level rack to keep the shoulders true.

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
