What we would tell you in the studio

  • Folded roll neck. The neck sits tall and loose around the throat without pinching. You can fold it down once into a neat collar or leave it bunched high for extra coverage in the cold.
  • Dropped shoulder sleeve. The long sleeves start low on the arm from dropped shoulder seams. Fine ribbing along the wrists pulls the cuff closer to the skin to keep the extra length in place.
  • Stepped hemline. The lower edge is cut longer in the back than in the front. Open side slits split the ribbing at each hip so the heavy fabric hangs straight without bunching over trousers.
  • Cold wash care. Machine wash on a gentle cycle using cold water and a mild liquid soap. Reshape the damp knit by hand and dry it flat on a towel so the weight does not stretch the yarn.

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
