What we would tell you in the studio

  • Neckline and seams. The plain round crew neck sits close to the base of the throat with a banded rib finish. Exposed exterior seams trace the shoulder line and down the sides, giving definition to the wide cut.
  • Sleeve and cuff gauge. Long sleeves extend from dropped shoulders and narrow toward the wrists. The cuffs are worked in a firm vertical grain rib that stays pushed up on the forearm or covers the wrist.
  • Split hemline. The lower hem extends past the hip line with open side slits. That break in the ribbing allows the knit to drape straight over trousers or leggings without catching or pulling.
  • Washing and care. Hand wash in cold water or run on a gentle machine cycle with mild detergent. Avoid bleach, press out excess water without twisting, and lay flat to dry to keep the seams aligned.

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
