What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crew neckline and shoulders. The ribbed crew neck sits flat against the collarbone without pulling tight. We dropped the shoulder line low on the arm to keep the upper body loose and let the sleeves fall cleanly into place.
  • Exposed seam details. Outside seam stitching runs along the shoulder and sleeve construction, giving the knit visible structure. The vertical grain on the cuffs anchors the long sleeves at the wrist.
  • Hem and side splits. The hem drops past the hip line with generous side splits cut into the ribbing. This open construction stops the lower band from gripping the hips and lets the fabric drape straight.
  • Care and washing. Hand wash cold or run on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent. Avoid bleach, skip the tumble dryer, and lay the pullover flat on a clean towel so the knit retains its shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
