Oversized Sweaters for Women
We knit this crewneck with a wide body that hangs away from the torso rather than hugging it. The length extends down past the hips, making it easy to pair with narrow trousers or base layers. Visible exterior seams run along the knit to give the clean surface clear structure.

What we would tell you in the studio
- Exposed exterior seams. Raised outward seams trace the construction of the body and sleeves. They break up the wide panels of plain knit and add a blunt structural line across the front and shoulders.
- Crew neckline and cuffs. The plain round crewneck sits flat against the collarbone without pulling. At the wrists, vertical grain ribbing gathers the long sleeves so they stay in place when pushed up the forearm.
- Split hemline. We cut the hem long to land around the upper leg, then opened the side seams. These side vents let the lower edge part naturally when you walk or sit, preventing the knit from bunching up.
- Care and drying. Wash this sweater by hand or run it on a cold, gentle machine cycle with mild soap. Lay it flat on a drying rack rather than hanging it up, so the heavy damp yarn retains its shape.
Living with this one
Do
- Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
- Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
- Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
- Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.
Skip
- Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
- The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
- Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
- Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
