What we would tell you in the studio

  • Exposed seam details. The outside seam lines give structural definition to the body and sleeves. These exposed joins add texture across the shoulders and down the sides of the plain-knit red fabric.
  • Crewneck and cuffs. A simple round band finishes the neck without pulling or binding. At the wrists, vertical grain ribbing gathers the long sleeve slightly to keep the hem off the hands.
  • Split tunic hem. The lower edge drops past the hip toward the upper leg, vented at both sides. Those open side slits let the heavy knit drape cleanly without bunching when you sit.
  • Cold cycle care. Wash by hand or run on a gentle machine cycle using cold water and mild soap. Lay the sweater flat on a dry towel to preserve the shape and seam lines.

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
