What we would tell you in the studio

  • Exposed seam lines. We left the joining seams turned outward along the torso and sleeves. That exterior ridge breaks up the smooth face of the knit and keeps the oversized shape grounded.
  • Crew neck and drop shoulders. The round neckline is bound with narrow ribbing that sits flat against the collarbone. Because the shoulder seam sits low on the arm, the long sleeves start with extra slack.
  • Split tunic hem. The bottom hem lands low around the hips and upper thigh. Deep side splits open the lower edge so the knit does not catch when you walk or sit.
  • Cold wash care. Hand washing in cold water protects the yarn surface from fuzzing. If you use a machine, select a gentle cycle with mild soap and lay the sweater flat on a towel to dry.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
