What we would tell you in the studio

  • Exposed seam lines. We run the seams along the outside of the knit across the shoulders and sleeves. It gives the white yarn a visible ridge line that breaks up the flat face of the stitch work.
  • Crew neck collar. The round neckline is bound with clean ribbing that rests close to the base of the neck. It keeps its shape after pulling over your head and layers easily over collared shirts.
  • Side split hem. The lower edge drops past the waist with open splits on both side seams. The fabric hangs straight down without gripping the hips, letting base layers show through at the side openings.
  • Washing and drying. Hand wash in cold water with mild soap, or run on a gentle machine cycle in cold water. Lay the knit flat to dry so the heavy oversized body does not stretch out of shape.

Living with this one

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
