What we would tell you in the studio

  • Exposed outer seams. We leave the shoulder and sleeve construction seams exposed on the outside of the knit. It gives the horizontal striping a broken, textured border along the arms.
  • Crew neckline and cuffs. The plain round crew sits close to the base of the neck with a dense rib that holds its shape. Matching vertical grain ribbing finishes the long cuffs.
  • Long split hem. The body drops past the hips with open side vents at the bottom edge. This lets the wide front and back panels drape straight down rather than gathering around the base.
  • Gentle cycle care. Wash by hand or use a gentle machine cycle with cold water and mild detergent. Lay the sweater flat to dry so the weight of the damp yarn does not pull the shape.

Do

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
