What we would tell you in the studio

  • Crewneck and outside seams. The plain round crew neckline sits flat against the collarbone without pulling. We reversed the shoulder and side joins to leave the structural seams exposed on the outside of the knit, adding raised lines along the body.
  • Body cut and side splits. The body is cut wide and loose, dropping straight down to a long hem that rests low near the hips. Deep side splits open the lower edge so the front and back panels move freely when walking or sitting.
  • Sleeve and cuff gauge. Long sleeves extend from dropped shoulders down to the wrist. We knit the cuffs in a vertical grain rib that grips lightly, keeping the extra sleeve fabric gathered cleanly above the hands instead of hanging loose over them.
  • Cold wash and flat dry. Wash this knit by hand or run it on a gentle machine cycle using cold water and mild detergent. Skip the bleach. Lay the sweater flat on a clean towel to dry so the heavy, relaxed shape keeps its proportions.

  • Wash cold and on the gentle cycle, or by hand if the yarn feels loose.
  • Dry it flat, in shape, away from the radiator.
  • Fold it on the shelf rather than hanging it by the shoulders.
  • Measure a jumper you already like and compare it before you settle on a size.

Skip

  • Bleach and fabric softener, both of them flatten the surface.
  • The hot tumble dryer, which is how knit becomes one size smaller.
  • Hangers with thin shoulders, they leave two points that never come out.
  • Ironing directly on the face of the knit.
